Recipes are a list of ingredients and a way to treat them to make something edible.

Think of them as directions to a destination. Yes, some of them may need to be followed, but there are often alternatives. Just because you do not have an ingredient does not mean you cannot make the recipe. I usually make do with what I have on hand and sometimes create a new recipe.
